Thank You to the Board!

As the outgoing President of the NCHR-SD Board of Directors, I have a number of ‘thank-you’s’  to pass along. First, I want to thank Janet Mainenti who was the president before me. She stayed on as the President for a total of 3 years – one additional year than the normal term of two years. I’ve also relied on her guidance from time to time during my tenure.

My second thank-you is to the board members I’ve had during my two years as president. We have had a few changes, but I very much appreciate our board. They show up at our board meetings and give their excellent views, opinions and support. They make everything happen for our members. As a result, our attendance is up at our luncheons and our leadership roundtables, we have a key partnership with the San Diego Employers Association (SDEA), a new, much improved website and a whole new energy level.

I am very excited about the board for 2019 with Melissa Wadley as the incoming President. Discussions are already taking place that should further expand our membership and allow NCHR-SD to provide even more value to our members.

    USMC Toys for Tots

    By Michele Meleen

    President of WACS Parent Connection

The first toy ever donated to Toys for Tots was a homemade Raggedy Ann Doll in 1947. When Major Bill Hendricks couldn't find an organization that distributed toys to kids for Christmas, he created Toys for Tots along with the help of fellow marines. Only one year later, in 1948, Walt Disney designed the infamous train logo and the program spread nationwide.

    Facts and Figures

The number of children served, and toys donated in 2017 speaks volumes about the efforts of this organization:

    • 18 million toys distributed annually
    • 7 million children receiving toys in 2017
    • More than 240 million children served since inception
    • Toys for Tots programs in nearly 800 locations across all 50 states
